The Ultimate Menstrual Phase Beet Smoothie

Yes this recipe has beets. But stay with me. I promise you’ll barely taste them and the benefits for your menstrual cycle will be so incredible it will become your new favorite supportive drink. So let’s chat how I found this miracle elixir.
Each month like clockwork my period comes usually around the full moon. While I am immensely grateful to get my period, love the witchy vibes and acknowledge that so many struggle with regular cycles, for as long as I can remember my periods have been no joke. Cramps, migraines, and generally just a lot of blood. Like can’t stand up, nonfunctional heavy bleeding for at least two days that leaves me feeling totally depleted. I’ve tried medication and hormones, have electrolytes stocked and push hydration like it’s my job, but nothing quite helps. Until this.

I’ve always found beets frankly disgusting. They taste like dirt in my opinion and wow I’m really selling this recipe well aren’t I? One menstrual week, I suddenly started craving them and didn’t know why. Well, it turns out, those red round veggies my body was craving for a very specific reason. Beets are rich in potassium and nitric oxide, critical components in easing cramps and supporting proper bloodflow. They have iron which can replenish what’s lost through your menstrual blood and contain betacarotene and antioxidants that reduce inflammation and can help fight fatigue. In fact, clinical studies have shown that it is a highly effective (and cost effective) treatment to fighting dysmenorrhea which can cause painful periods with heavy bleeding.
So I threw them in a smoothie, the juices truly bloodlike, coating the sides of the nutribullet, and then tried as hard as possible to cover up the taste. What I came up with is so delicious and the slightly earthy taste of the beets grounds the smoothie without overpowering it. Additions of banana (cramp relieving), blueberries (bloat reducer), protein powder (energy elevator) and chia (hormone supporter) make this an all around treat for you as well as completely and utterly nourishing to your body during your menstrual phase.
The best part? This smoothie without fail gets me back on my feet after every menstrual cycle. I can instantly feel my body energizing, becoming revitalized and feeling back to myself. It’s nourishing, restorative red-hued elixir is something I look forward to every month and I hope it helps you to have a more enjoyable menstrual phase.
