Hormone-Balancing Seed Cycling Moon Bites

I have had hormonal issues for as long as I can remember. From the moment I got my period at 13, my cycle was marked by intense cramps, heavy bleeding, and migraines. I have gone on six different types of birth control, all with increasingly worse side effects. I have taken all the supplements and medication and still struggle when my time of the month comes around. I am over it. Reading Alissa Vitti’s book In The Flo has inspired me to take control of my hormonal health as I have for many other elements of my health through education and experimentation.

In addition to cycle syncing which I have started doing (if you haven’t read that article yet, start here), I also have been interested in seed cycling. Seed cycling is a way to naturally support your hormonal fluctuations using four seeds: pumpkin, flax, sunflower, and sesame.

Seed cycling is supposed to:

  • Help achieve hormone balance

  • Lighten heavy periods

  • Decrease PMS symptoms

  • Improving symptoms of PCOS, endometriosis, and even menopause

The list goes on and on. So how does it work? It’s pretty simple really. Days 1-13 (menstrual + follicular) you consume ground pumpkin and flax seeds. Both of these seeds naturally contain estrogen and given your body needs an estrogen boost during this period, supporting it through nutrition helps the body balance. Days 14-28 (luteal + ovulatory) you consume sesame and sunflower seeds. Both of these seeds naturally contain progesterone which your body needs during this time.

Serving size is a tablespoon a day and they should be blended to better be able to be absorbed into your system. Here is a great and inexpensive blender choice.

Now to the recipes! I obviously am not reliable or consistent enough to grind seeds every day and sprinkle them beautifully onto my food. Instead, I made irresistible bites for each phase, sweet, nutritious, and addicting so I’d run to the fridge every day to have one for my daily dose of hormonal support. They should be eaten over the 28 days of your cycle, similar to the 28 days of the moon cycle (get it? moon bites!). Those recipes are below. Spiced Pumpkin And Flax Seed Cycling Moon Bites (Days 1-14)

Spiced Pumpkin And Flax Seed Cycling Moon Bites (Days 1-14)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sprouted pumpkin seeds
  • 1 cup flax seeds (Note: The flax seeds must be ground right before your cycle - buying them pre-bought ground will eliminate much of their estrogen potency.)
  • 1/2 cup shredded organic coconut
  • 1/2 tablespoon cardamom
  • 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 tablespoon pumpkin spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons organic maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Organic coconut sugar if desired
  • Water as needed

Instructions

  1. Using a blender or grinder, combine pumpkin and flax seeds until paste forms
  2. Add to bowl and place all dry ingredients in - mix well
  3. Add in wet ingredients and water if mixture appears too dry and blend into dough
  4. Wet hands and form 14 teaspoon-sized balls (one for each day) and place in a airtight container to store in the fridge
  5. Store and enjoy!

  • 1 cup unhulled sesame seeds
  • 1 cup organic sprouted sunflower seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup 80% dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup of dried cranberries if desired
  • Organic coconut sugar if desired
  • Water as needed

Instructions
